Competition Weight - A rant!
Hey Guys,
Today I want to talk briefly about competition weight.
If you compete in a weight class sport on a regular (or semi regular) basis then you will know what your competition weight is. Now some of you may be moving up or down a weight class, but this still means you know what weight you have to be before you compete again (or on the day/day before of competition).
So why do people jump so far out of their weight class between competitions?
I hear it all the time,
"I'm never going to get this fat again, I hate dieting, next time I'm only going to go 5/10 pounds over my competition weight"
However they always do. The day after the competition they are straight back to slamming chocolate and take aways like the zombie apocalypse is at the end of the week. Know don't get me wrong, I know the junk tastes good. We are all human and like a glass or two of alcohol and some nice food now and again, but there is a massive difference between a nice treat and a two month binge.
Stop it.
If you are an athlete (or have the cheek to call yourself one) then fucking act like it. Plan your nutrition and training programme ALL YEAR to be the best you can be. I really can't imagine why people would purposely make consistent decisions that move them away from their goal?
Are you seriously telling me that a pizza makes you feel better than a gold medal?
NO ONE GIVES A FLYING FUCK ABOUT YOUR LACK OF SELF CONTROL.
All that matters in competition (in my opinion) is whether you absolutely did everything you could so that you could do your best. Your REAL best. Then even if you get beat, you can hold your head high. Getting beat by a heavier opponent because you didn't have the mental strength to say no to a cookie, is nothing more than you deserve. The world doesn't care about your excuses, or flaws or your weakness. To be honest, it doesn't give a fuck full stop. All that matter is what YOU DO to make sure that YOU can be proud when you look in the mirror.
You can have some junk food or a small drink as part of a planned cheat, but have a plan! We are all human, we all like to eat and drink nice things. Just make sure that they are helping you movie towards a goal, not away from it.
Now most will read what I have just wrote and say "What does he know" and "What an arsehole to tell me I can't have cake", well you're probably right. What do I know? But I'm hoping that a very select few of you will take a real look at themselves and maybe make a change for the better. Not next year, not next week, but now.
But what do I know?
Thanks for reading,
Stay healthy,
Mike
